For their first acting workshop, the students in Hugo’s class are given a theme: change. Drawing on their own inspiration, the students provide texts, monologues and dialogues from the repertoire, and sometimes write original texts to flesh out the theme. The scenes are then put together and rehearsed to create the final performance.
To change is to move from one state to another. We can change ourselves, because we choose to or because we have to. But we can also want to change others, by helping them – or forcing them – to change their behaviour or their thinking. We can change jobs, take a new direction in life, change partners, countries, cars or hairstyles. We can also see an elderly person gradually losing their independence…
Texts by Marius von Mayenburg, Rémi de Vos, Yaqut Tawashi, Jean-Michel Ribbes, Becky Albertalli, Gus Van Sant, Keigo Hinashino, Alexandra Badea, Virginie Despentes, Victor Hugo, and the 9 students.
